Additional Information: | THIS FACADE HAS BEEN ALMOST COMPLETELY ALTERED. THIS WAS ORIGINALLY A QUEEN ANNE STYLE RETAIL BUILDING HAVING TWO SECOND STORY ORIEL BAYS OVER A STOREFRONT THAT HAD A DISPLAY WINDOW PLACED ON EITHER SIDE OF A RECESSED ENTRANCE, WITH A SECOND ENTRANCE TO THE RIGHT THAT SERVED THE SECOND STORY. BY 1975, HOWEVER, THE ORIEL BAYS HAD BEEN REMOVED AND THE FIRST STORY STOREFRONT HAD BEEN COMPLETELY ALTERED. THE CURRENT STOREFRONT AND THE TWO ORIEL BAYS ABOVE IT WERE CONSTRUCTED IN 2005 AND WHILE THEY ARE SUPERBLY DONE, THEY ARE NOT ORIGINAL. The Racket Shop sold notions and was owned by J.H. Cole, who lived upstairs. Other tenants have been attorneys and the Washburn Waterworks. 2022 - Resurveyed. The S.A. Yates Block is a two-story Queen Anne commercial building built in 1889. The building has a rectilinear footprint and is constructed of locally quarried rock-faced brownstone. The first story storefront features a recessed central entrance enclosed with a replacement plate glass and metal frame door with sidelights and a multi-light transom. The entrance is flanked by show windows with replacement plate glass and metal frames and topped by multi-light transoms. The entrance and windows are topped by round-arched window hoods comprised of smooth brownstone voussoirs resting on Tuscan pilasters with carved cushion capitals. The pilasters are separated by cast iron support posts. A metal lintel separates the first and second stories. The second story features a pair of oriel bay windows with metal surrounds. The windows have been replaced with one-over-one vinyl sashes and have been reframed with wood. |
