Additional Information: | A 'site file' exists for this property. It contains additional information such as correspondence, newspaper clippings, or historical information. It is a public record and may be viewed in person at the State Historical Society, Division of Historic Preservation. 2001- "This two-story, cream brick, ltalianate style house has a two-story block on the rear facade. Its ltalianate features include cornice brackets; round-arch windows on the primary facade with soldier brick surrounds, carved keystones and stone sills; and a hipped roof with a centered gable. A quatrefoil window is found in the peak of the centered gable and an oval window is located on the north facade. Segmental-arch windows on the north facade lack surrounds. A one-story, wooden porch with dentils, turned balusters and decorative supports shelters the primary entrance, which features a four-panel, wooden door with round-arch upper panels. Similar to its neighbor at 1119 W. Kilbourn Avenue, a first-story, front-facade picture window was removed during the 1980 rehabilitation and the two round-arch window openings were installed to replicate those found on the second story. A Colonial Revival doorway surround was also removed from the primary entrance, and the current door and porch were installed. Additionally, the 1980 Milwaukee Journal article referenced above states that the quatrefoil attic window was formerly boarded over, and a cream brick wall that borders the property was installed in circa 1980. This structure was constructed in circa 1875. The first available building permit indicates the property was owned by Louis and Margaret Grief, who operated a medical facility/spa on the premises from 1922-1935. Listed under the name Class Mineral Fume Health Baths, the building included offices, massage rooms and mineral and steam baths on the first level. The second floor consisted of four sleeping rooms, one living room and a bathroom. In 1941, Raymond Wilke, a WI&C Company serviceman, owned the property. Four years later, Betty Schmidtbauer obtained the property and by 1961, E. Greib owned the building after it had changed hands many times in the intervening years." - "Marquette Interchange, Milwaukee", WisDOT ID #1060-05-02, Prepared by Heritage Research (McQuillen) (2001). |
