"Behind the [Carillon] tower is the Social Science Building, housing Anthropology, Sociology, Economics, and Institution for Research on Poverty, a national center for the study of poverty and policies aimed at its elimination, established in 1966 by the U.S. Office of Economic Opportunity. The building was completed in 1962, and enlarged by an eight-story rear addition in 1966. A wide, anodized-aluminum screen covers much if its front. Inside on the first floor is a mural by Emeritus Professor Waltrous: "Man, Creator of Order and Disorder,: depicting a giant figure, half calm, half frenzied."
