NOTES
Additional Information:A 'site file' exists for this property. It contains additional information such as correspondence, newspaper clippings, or historical information. It is a public record and may be viewed in person at the Wisconsin Historical Society, State Historic Preservation Office. The building functions are clearly expressed in the raised tower (office), and the classroom section that is built into the side of the hill. A plaza, which also covers the roof of the classroom section, unites the two. Additional characteristics of the Modernist style incorporated in Van Vleck are decorative concrete panels at the base of the tower, and the entrance pavilion accessing the classroom section from the plaza. The tower features highly articulated curtain walls, which hang from the concrete-encased steel frame of the tower section. Van Vleck received the 1964 Honor Award from the AIA Wisconsin. Van Vleck retains a high degree of integrity. "Walk south behind Bascom Hall to Van Vleck Hall, a large modern concrete-and-glass structure surrounded by a plaza. The 12-story (nine floors and three basements) mathematics building was the first academic high-rise building on the campus. Named for Professor Edward Burr Van Vleck, chairman of Mathematics from 1906 to 1963 and designed by Flad and Associates of Madison. You can stop for snacks at the canteen on B3 (basement three) or visit the research conference room on the ninth floor for a panoramic view of the campus and the city. The modern building with its vertical emphasis is one of the best examples of 1960s-style architecture on campus." University of Wisconsin-Madison, University of Wisconsin-Madison Tour Guide, 1988.
