Additional Information: | Sam Stahl was the trustee at the time of survey. Good example of a cream brick commercial building. Original upper floors and cornice, but modern storefront. Originally constructed in 1861 with three floors. Fourth floor added in 1893. Established in 1850. John Pritzlaff and Co. constructed this building in 1861 and moved again in 1874. Became the largest hardware store in Milwaukee and one of the largest in the West. Peter Pritzlaff moved in 1874 and interest in the hardware business at this location was sold to Hilgendorf, Kolloge & Co. and operated under their name. https://urbanmilwaukee.com/2016/07/19/yesterdays-milwaukee-the-largest-hardware-store-in-america/ shows the Pritzlaff Building (presently 1033 N. Old World 3rd St.) as having the historic address of 299 Third Street. |
