Additional Information: | 30 day raze notice waived by the WHS on 3/30/2004. Rear addition to be demolished for parking in 11/1998. Locally designated 11-17-87. The Conroy Building celebrates the full-blown commercial form of the Queen Anne style. The ebullient façade, flashing its expensive imported red-brick, red-sandstone, and terracotta cladding, stood out from its mellow cream-brick neighbors when built in 1881. The bold composition combines broad second-story oriels, gaping third-story windows, and unusual false gables on the top floor. HISTORICAL SIGNIFICANCE: Conroy established his ice cream business in 1868, moved to this location in 1873 and erected this building in 1881. |
