Additional Information: | Constructed of redwood and Wausau granite collected from local fields. Materials of the interior reflect those of the exterior as the baptismal font is constructed of granite, and both the altar and pulpit are of redwood and granite. The roofline is supported with wooden beams and contemporary and cushioned pews are located inside. Finally, a very unique, carved wooden cross is located in the sanctuary; the left arm of which is longer than the right in order to direct attention to the pulpit. Tile was added on top of the polished cement floor at an unknown date. Two stone structures, a planter and a sign are also located on the property. St. John's United Church of Christ began in 1868 as the Evangelische Gemeinde. The congregation built their first frame structure in 1871, 3 miles south of Random Lake. C. 1903 that structure was razed and the timbers were re-used to construct a church on Allen St within the Village of Random Lake. In 1934, the Evangelical Synod and the Reformed Church of America merged, resulting in the name change to St. John's Evangelical and Reformed Church. In 1957, the Evangelical and Reformed Church merged with the Congregational Christian Church to form the United Church of Christ, the denomination of which St. John's reflects today. The current structure was built in 1964 and the first services were held there in 1965. |
