NOTES
Additional Information:A 'site file' exists for this property. It contains additional information such as correspondence, newspaper clippings, or historical information. It is a public record and may be viewed in person at the Wisconsin Historical Society, Division of Historic Preservation-Public History. 2010 - Riveted plate-girder, simple-trunnion, double-leaf bascule superstructure, with bottom-mounted segmental rack and counterweight. Each bascule leaf contains two curved, built-up, plate bascule girders mounted on simple trunnions. The leaves are raised and lowered by moving the large segmental racks mounted beneath the girders. Concealed from view within the abutments and below the roadway are the counterweights mounted on the shore ends of the leaves and the lift machinery. The bridge retains the original lift machinery. Overall structure length is 174 feet, including the bascule span and abutments. The span between the trunnion centerlines is 115 feet. The out-to-out width of the leaves is 61 feet, including a 48-foot roadway and two 6-foot, 6-inch cantilevered sidewalks. A two-level, octagonal, concrete control tower is located at the southwest abutment and features glass block windows on the street level, fixed-pane multiple-light windows that encircle the upper operator level, and a stepped, flat octagonal roof with a wide overhang. The tower is approximately 15 feet, 8 inches by 13 feet, 4 inches at the base (sidewalk level) with tapered corners. At roof level the tower is approximately 19 feet by 13 feet, 10 inches and is larger due to the wide overhang of the roof. The tower exhibits simple lines of the modern style. The control tower contains the control equipment for both bascule leaves. The bridge has steel-grid decking. The wood plank sidewalks are flanked by original simple steel railings. Modern barrier arms are found on the east and west approaches. A steel service staircase located on north side of the east abutment terminates in a platform and steel entry door that provides access to the bridge mechanicals. Protection piers are aligned on both sides of the abutments on the north and south sides of the bridge and consist of wood pilings around a circular mass of concrete. The defining characteristics that identify it as a "Milwaukee Type" simple-trunnion bascule bridge include the plate girder construction, below-deck superstructure, and bottom-mounted segmental rack and counterweight. steel beam or plate girder bridge
