Additional Information: | According to Dan Fose, representative of the Cress Funeral Home Company, the Cress University Avenue Funeral Home was designed by Jerome Roger Butler, a Chicago architect. Butler is well known in the Chicago area for his 1976 restoration of the Navy Pier. According to Mr. Fose, Butler is the brother-in-law of the funeral home's original owner and developer, Sam San Phillipo. 2010- "This newly inventoried funeral parlor is located on the south side of University Avenue, east of Allen Boulevard. Erected ca. 1970, the one-story building faces north, is oriented parallel to University Avenue, and is set on a small rise overlooking roadway. Faced with patterned, hued brick, the building rests on a poured concrete foundation. The lowpitched, hipped roof has several gablets and is sheathed with asphalt shingles. Although largely rectilinear, the building does have an asymmetrical shape, mostly due to several projecting building canopies. Original canopies are supported by brick post and newer ones by metal posts. Wooden casement windows are found throughout the building and appear original. The Cress University Avenue Funeral Home features design elements indicative of 1960s-70s commercial architecture, including cantilievered overhangs, casement windows, patterned brick, and structural building elements extending into the landscape. The modernized entryways are minor alterations and the building retains good integrity." - "CTH MS (University Ave), Allen Boulevard-N Segoe Rd", WisDOT ID #5992-08-12(79), Prepared by Rachel E Bankowitz and Elizabeth L Miller (2010). Since it was first surveyed this building has been substantially remodeled (2012-2015)and it no longer retains its original appearance. |
