Additional Information: | Rising three stories and situated in between a pair of five-story structures, this brick building is topped with a flat roof. The structure's storefront has been altered to include a pair of plate glass windows; modern signage indicates the previous first-floor occupant. The remaining two floors feature three bays of paired fenestration; the central bay of which features cut-stone heads, while the outside bays are without ornamentation. Windows are one-over-one-light sashes. A corrugated metal-covered passageway between the flanking buildings is situated atop the rear (north end) of the roof. Building permit information indicates that this structure was erected in 1895 at a cost of $4,000 and was designed by the Milwaukee firm of Crane & Barkhausen. Although the permit lists Herman & Mariner as the property's owner, city directory information for the years both prior and after 1895 do not list any businesses under the combined name of Herman & Mariner. A John Mariner is noted in real estate in 1896; however, none of the Herman names are in any way associated with real estate or the like. A variety of tenants occupied this structure over the last one hundred years, the last of which was a restaurant named Chicago's. |
