NOTES
Additional Information:A 'site file' exists for this property. It contains additional information such as correspondence, newspaper clippings, or historical information. It is a public record and may be viewed in person at the Wisconsin Historical Society, State Historic Preservation Office. J IN THE PHOTO CODES IS SHORT FOR JAS. St. Louis Catholic Church is a Gothic Revival church building with limestone walls, gothic-arched openings, and two impressive towers flanking the main entrance. The towers are decorated with stepped buttresses, stone corbelling, gothic arched openings, and tall tent roofs. Most of the gothic-arched openings are filled with decorative stained glass. A school addition runs off of one corner of the building, and a two-story residential addition projects from the other side wall of the building. The building has the typical gothic-arched openings of the style and the towers are an unusual and well-executed highlight of the building. The French-speaking Catholics in Fond du Lac formed their own congregation in 1868. They began construction of this church, which they finished in 1871. The two large spires were finished later, in 1891. 2007-A fire significantly destroyed the church (in 2007); within a month its remains were torn down.
