Description of Complex:
The Wild Rose State Fish Hatchery (20 10E-24) is located just north of Wild Rose, in Waushara County. The hatchery is Wisconsin DNR's largest cold water fish hatchery. With both cold and cool water capabilities, the Wild Rose Hatchery is able to raise a variety of fish including brown trout, chinook salmon, northern pike, muskellunge, walleye, suckers, and sturgeon.
The complex consists of numerous buildings. Among them, a residence (10/17, 1938), an egg house (10/5, 1937), a meat house (10/6, 1929), two garages (10/7, 10/22, 1930 and 1935), an information booth (10/8, 1937), a mess hall (10/13, 1938), a wood storage shack (10/24, 1938) a metal storage shack (11/2, 1931), raceways (10/10, 10/20, circa 1938), as well as a raceway feeding shack (10/15, 1938). Most of the buildings are cream buff colored drop siding or clapboard with burnt ochre wood trim materials. The buildings that are open to the public are in excellent condition, but the buildings that service the complex are in poor condition. The residence is in excellent condition, as is the raceway system. The complex is being considered as a potential Historic District. |
