Additional Information: | 2011- This two-story, red brick, Gabled Ell is located on the east side of Osseo Road, south of its intersection with Whitehall Road. Erected ca.1890, the newly inventoried house rises from a stone foundation and faces west toward Osseo Road. The cross gable roof is sheathed with asphalt shingles. A small front-facing gable pierces the roof of the wing on the main (west-facing) facade. A one-story, enclosed porch is located in the ell of the main facade. The porch rises from a brick foundation, is clad with asbestos shingles, has a half-hipped, asphalt-shingled roof, and retains three-over- one, Craftsman-style windows. A one-story, half-hipped, vinyl-sided addition extends from the rear (east-facing) facade. Wooden decking has been built onto the addition to provide a wheelchair ramp to the house. Segmental-arch openings, segmental-arch brick lintels, stone sills, cornice returns and wide eaves add embellishment throughout the house. The main facade displays a small circle window near the gable peak as well as an intact, single-entry door. Many of the earliest buildings constructed in Independence were erected of red brick, which was readily available from local factories. The first known brick factory in Independence was established by Ferdinand Horst in 1882. It is thought that many of the red brick houses standing today originated from his factory, although no specific connections were made during the survey. The vernacular house does not embody distinctive characteristics of any type, period, or method of construction. It should be noted here that the group of red brick houses on Osseo Road (and in the APE) were assessed for their architectural/historical significance as a whole, or in other words, as a potential historic district; however, modern development (newer intrusions) have altered the connection between these buildings such that the sense of historic environment has been diminished. |
