This house is significant to Wisconsin labor history and the University of Wisconsin. Madison Landmark: 7/9/1984. This home was designed by Cora Tuttle, the first woman practicing architecture in Madison. It was built for John R. Commons, University of Wisconsin economist, whose students pioneered social legislation of the 1930s, including Social Security. He named his home "Hocheera," the Ho-Chunk word for welcome.
