Additional Information: | A 'site file' exists for this property. It contains additional information such as correspondence, newspaper clippings, or historical information. It is a public record and may be viewed in person at the Wisconsin Historical Society, State Historic Preservation Office. Geo. Zagel & Son were the builders. The Porth Building is a two story terra cotta clad commercial building designed in the Neo-Classic Revival style. The building is on the corner of North 4th Street and thus has two exposed elevations. Both are highly oramented with much decorative terra cotta. The north elevation is divided into five bays by fluted pilasters with Corinthian capitals. The three wider bays each have two large openings on the storefront level and three double hung windows on the second floor. The two narrower bays have round arch canopies on the ground floor and a pair of round arch double hung windows above. The west elevation is very similar. The panels below the second floor windows have medallion and garland decorations. The cornice has dentils below and a parapet above, which has the effect of a closed ballustrade. The pilasters continue through the cornice and are terminated by caps at the parapet level. The building is a highly ornamented example of Neo-Classic Revival style terra cotta; it is significant for its well-executed design and comprehensive detail. The Porth Building was constructed in 1926 for Edward Porth & Sons at a cost of $40,000. The architect was George Zagel & Brother. Porth is listed as owning the building as late as 1951. |
