Additional Information: | CARVED EXPOSED RAFTER ENDS ON HIP ROOFED PORTIONCANOPY ON COBBLESTONE AND WOOD SUPPORTS TRANSOMED DOORS*CHARACTERISTIC OF USE OF STONE IN SPOONER 2018 - This c.1925 former Texaco gas station has a one-story rectilinear core, enlarged by a more massive two-story garage on its north side. The core has a house-with-canopy form with a hipped roof sheathed in asphalt shingles and accentuated by a decorative scalloped fascia. Exterior walls are clad in river rock that varies in size and color. On the west-facing façade is a canopy for vehicles to drive through. It is created by an extension of the hipped roof, which is supported at the corners by wood posts on battered river rock piers. The fuel pumps, which are no longer extant, would have been located between these piers. The door opening centered on the façade has been infilled with log siding. The main entrance to the building is now on the south, side elevation. Fixed, single-light display windows are located on the facade and side elevations. With a hipped roof and river rock exterior, the garage mimics the look of core of the building. The garage bays on the west façade have been infilled with log siding. The building is currently used as a store/gift shop. No Texaco signage or other references to its past use as a gas station remain. |
