Additional Information: | MOULDED METAL CORNICEBRICK WINDOW SURROUNDS DIAGONAL CNR W/ ENTRANCE TRANSOMED WINDOWS SIDE ENTRANCE W/ LARGE ROUND ARCH STONE LINTEL [Date Cnst:(SPOONER ADVOCATE)] 2018 - This two-story commercial building was erected in 1915. It has a rectilinear footprint and a flat roof with a parapet and decorative pressed metal cornice. There are several entrances to the building. The northeast corner is canted, which forms the primary entrance on the first story, including a glazed door sheltered by a flat awning and flanked by polished stone panels. The associated storefront has a string of windows on the east half of the north elevation. The west half of the north (front) facing elevation has a glazed storefront with a recessed entry. Side entrances on the west elevation include a modern entrance pavilion, door placed within a large stone arch, and recessed entrance on a former storefront which has been re-clad in wood. Windows on the second story are one-over-one, placed in regular intervals. These windows are grouped in pairs and feature transoms on the south half of the west elevation. Decorative brickwork adorns the building. This includes a soldier course between the first and second stories, brickwork that frames the fenestration bays, and a header bond frieze below the cornice. Above second story windows on the façade is a stone inset sign that reads “MASONIC TEMPLE” and features Masonic insignias. The building has been expanded by a modern two-story concrete block addition on the rear (south) elevation. The construction of this building in 1915 was advertised in Construction News, which noted that A. D. Burnett Hardware and Furniture was erecting a new building that was to feature a lodge space leased by the Masonic Lodge. The building was designed by the Minneapolis architecture firm of Haugen Newstram Co. According to the 1917 Sanborn Fire Insurance Map, the northeast corner of the building housed a bank and the west storefront and rear of the building housed a furniture and hardware store, with the Masonic Lodge above. A. D. Burnett sold the business in 1921, and his successor continued to operate it as a hardware store. The building functioned as a hardware store from its construction in 1915 until c.2000, when it became the Northwind Book & Fiber, which currently occupies the main space today. According to the building owner, the former Masonic Lodge space on the second floor is no longer intact. It is currently used as a karate studio and prior to that was a dance hall. |
