Additional Information: | AMONG THE 1ST 20 COMPANY HOUSES BUILT7 ROOM HOUSE BUILT AT A COST OF $7402/2 WINDOWSBASEMENT ADDED IN 1922SEE 20 WISCONSIN AVE FOR PHOTO OF IDENTICAL HOUSE "The House on the Hill (23 Wisconsin Ave.), the Montreal Haus Rentals (18, 19, 20, and 21 Wisconsin Ave.) and Ski Haus #10 (10 Wisconsin Ave.) These six houses were among the first twenty built by the Montreal Mining Company in 1907. Each one housed a single family in seven rooms, as a construction costs to the company of $740.00. For these miners, getting work was relatively easy -- the Montreal Shaft No. 4, which operated until the 1920s, was located just south of these houses. Although providing worker housing was considered progressive, it may have been necessary -- between 1900 and 1920, mines on the Gogebic Range exploded the population of the area, and their success drew immigrants from both other Wisconsin areas and overseas, especially from Italy and Finland."
