It is a public record and may be viewed in person at the Wisconsin Historical Society, State Historic Preservation Office. This two story Italianate styled house features an irregular shaped plan configuration, an unspecified stone foundation, a cream brick exterior, a cream brick trim and an asphalt shingled multi-gable roof. It is an excellent and well-preserved example of a variation of the Italianate style popular in Janesville in the late 1860's through the 1870's. Italianate features include overhaning eaves with decorative brackets, docorative window hoods, and a front porch. The residence is in excellent condition; It was owned by James J. Condon in 1982. Architectural Significance: Not only does it represent a type, period, or method of construction, but it also is a visual landmark in the area. Historical Statement: Built in 1876 for Charles B. Withington, a jeweler and invnetor of a device for binding grain. His invention was purchased by Cyrus McCormack and adapted into a twine binder. Historical Significance: The Charles B. Withington House is assocated with the life of a significant person, and is associated with significant historical events.
