NOTES
Additional Information:The WHS waived its 30 demolition notice for this property on 11/11/2010. This small brick house exhibits design characteristics typical of the Greek Revival style. These characteristics include gable ends with broken pediments (formed by brick corbelling -- unusual in Janesville), an entablature formed by a decorative use of brick, and a front door with sidelights and a transom. Although the house has been painted and a front portico has been added, the house retains a significant degree of original design integrity. In 1982 it was owned by Mina O'Nell of Route #2, in Whitewater, Wisconsin. The house is in fair condition.

The residence is architecturally significant in that it represents a type, period, or method of construction, and it is a visual landmark in the area.

Historical Statement:

This house was built in the mid 1850s for a member of the Yates family (the earliest documentary record, the 1854 Assessment Roll, lists the owner as the Yates estate). (See Bib. Ref. A). The house was owned by members of the Yates family until the 1860s, when Merrit Case, a constable, purchased the house. It was subsequently owned by Martin Delaney, a laborer.
