Additional Information: | This two story frame house with narrow lap siding represents a well-peserved example of the Italianate style. Italianate features include the low pitch roof, overhaning eaves with decorative brackets, double doors with glass panels, a central one bay porch, and decorative window moldings. The polychromatic color scheme, part of a recently completed restoration project, is out of character with the Italianate style. Gary J. Lenox owned the building in 1981. The residence, which is in excellent condition, is architecturally significant in that it possesses high artistic values, it represents a type, period, or method of construction, and it is a visual landmark in the area. It is historically significant in that it is associated with the lives of significant persons. Historical Statement: This house was built for (and most probably by) Luther Clark, a native of New York state. Clark settled in Janesville in 1844 and began a carpentry business. Clark was one of the most prolific builders in Janesville. Among the buildings constructed by Clark in Janesville are the Court Street Methodist Church, and the residences of A. P. Lovejoy, A. S. Pond, S. C. Jackman, William King, and Pliny Norcross. The house was subsequently owned by F. Stendel, a carpenter. Clark arrived in Janesville in 1849 from Oswego County, New York. |
