NOTES
Additional Information:This two story front gabled house features a rectangular shaped plan configuration (with additions), a stone foundation and exterior, a cut stone trim and an asphalt shingled gable roof. The stone was quarried from Ira Miltimore's stone quarry. This dwelling is the best preserved of a number of similar houses built in the southern portion of Janesville in the late 1840s and 1850s. The only decorative elements include the flat lintels and sills and the tall brick chimneys. The former single family residence, which is in good condition, now serves as a two-unit apartment. The dwelling is architecturally significant in that it represents a type, period, or method of construction and it is a visual landmark in the area. Robert J. Riley of 2523 Lucerne, in Janesville, owned the building in 1982.

This residence was built in about 1855 for Roswell Hill, a blacksmith who not only lived in, but also worked out of this building. (See Bib. Ref. A, B, C). The house was subsequently owned by Charles Wurl, an employee of the Chicago and Northwestern Railroad; John Abendroth, a shoemaker; and Gustav Manthei, a laborer.
