Additional Information: | The Grant School originated from the First Ward School, which opened in 1892; it was later renamed the Ulysses S. Grant Elementary School in 1912. In 1969 the original 1892 structure was demolished to make way for the present school, which retains the same name. The present school was erected on an enlarged site made available through the purchase of 20 homes in the same block. When erected, it boasted 22 classrooms, a media center, large gymnasium, fine arts room, large office area, guidance office, speech therapy room, teacher's lounge and workroom, and supply area. The playground marks the location of the former school, demolished by Spielvogel and Sons. The school currently educates kindergarten through fifth grade students. |
