Underwood Creek Parkway follows Underwood Creek between Bluemound Road and Swan Boulevard. The parkway has a paved drive with intermittent curb and gutter, pendant lights, and paved and unpaved pedestrian paths. Landscaping includes deciduous, coniferous, and shrubby undergrowth with intermittent clearings. Hansen Golf Course, established in 1938, is located near the northeast corner of Underwood Creek Parkway.
The first plans for a series of Milwaukee County parkways was developed in 1923, illustrating a number of curvilinear drives along the waterways of Wauwatosa. The first parkway plans were produced by landscape, architect Phelps Wyman, in 1925. The land was purchased in 1935, and in 1936 the county began constructing the parkway and drive with Civilian Conservation Corp laborers conducting most of the work including street grading, masonry work, construction of concrete bridges, and the construction of a small comfort station building. In the 1950s, more bridges were added to the Upper Menomonee River Parkway.
The Underwood Creek Parkway covers 205 acres from Mayfair Road to Swan Boulevard. The Underwood Creek Parkway, which includes Hansen Golf Course, has a drive that follows the river closely in a curvilinear path meant as a pleasure drive. The parkway includes many small-scale elements including a comfort station, pedestrian bridges, signage, and lighting. The parkway is also bisected by two railroads, the Canadian Pacific Railroad and the Chicago & North Western Railroad. |
