329 Dahl Street Henry F. and May Steele House
This two-story, stuccoed, Prairie School house probably was built for Henry F. and May Steele circa 1916 (City of Rhinelander tax rolls; Oneida County mortgages, 29:412). The house is front-gabled, with wide eaves, and features a belt course at the level of the second-story lintels, a flat-roofed canopy over the front first-story windows, a cornice board enriched with raised squares on each of the canopy and the main roofs, recessed second-story on the front facade, and inset tiles with geometric decorations above the second-story front facade windows. Henry F. Steele (1878-1952) was born in El Dorado (Fond du Lac County), Wisconsin, and came to Rhinelander in 1905. He served as City Attorney from 1905 until 1913, and as Oneida County Judge from 1913 until his death (History of Lincoln, Oneida and Vilas Counties, p. 404). Steele lived here until 1921. In 1921, James O'Melia, lumber company owner, bought the house (Oneida County deeds, 96:106. He lived in the house until at least 1930, and his wife, May O'Melia, continued to live here until at least 1936 (Rhinelander City Directories). She retained ownership of the house until at least 1950 (City of Rhinelander tax rolls).
