| Additional Information: | MOULDED AND BRACKETED CORNICE. ROUND ARCH WINDOWS W/BRICK LINTELS AND STONE SILLS. TRANSOMED ORIGINAL STOREFRONT W/MOULDED CORNICE. TRANSOMED DOORS. 16-18 East Davenport Street B. L. Horr and O. S. Shannon Building This two-story, brick, Italianate commercial building was constructed for the Horr and Shannon Grocery in 1909 (datestone). The building has a cast-iron storefront (stamped G. L. Mesker, Evansville, Indiana), round-arched second-story window openings with brick hood-moldings, and a pressed metal cornice. The integrity is slightly compromised by the replacement windows, but the historic character has been retained. Burleigh L. Horr's father, Leonard, brought the family to Rhinelander in 1882. Leonard was a carpenter, and built many of the early homes and businesses in the new community. B. L. Horr opened a grocery circa 1903. He took O. S. Shannon as a partner around 1908. By 1910, the partners had split, and Horr had sole ownership of this building and the grocery. Horr retired from the grocery businesses in 1921, and was appointed Oneida County Highway Commissioner. In 1924, he founded the Horr Culvert Company, and also began selling real estate. Horr died in 1944 (New North, October 19, 1944, obituary). James Hanchett's grocery was located in this building during the 1930s. Swartz Office Equipment followed, from at least 1950 until at least 1978 (Rhinelander City Directories). This is the sole surviving Italianate commercial block in Rhinelander. The integrity is slightly compromised by the replacement windows, but the historic character has been retained. |
