8 West Davenport Street First National Bank
This two-story, structural clay tile Prairie School commercial building was erected in 1910-11. The first floor is veneered with smooth-faced stone, the second with brick. Designed by a nationally-prominent, Minneapolis firm, the bank features a prominent, round-arched entrance, and raised brick and terra cotta ornamentation, the latter in intricate floral patterns. The First National Bank was founded in 1887 by Dr. Alfred D. Daniels and Oneida County Judge Levi Billings. It was first called the Bank of Rhinelander, but became the First National Bank upon incorporation, on May 5, 1890. It is now the Valley First National Bank (Oneida County: 1887-1987). The First National Bank is an outstanding and intact example of Prairie School commercial design.
