Additional Information: | A 'site file' exists for this property. It contains additional information such as correspondence, newspaper clippings, or historical information. It is a public record and may be viewed in person at the Wisconsin Historical Society, State Historic Preservation Office. The Langlois Building is a rectangular, three story building constructed of cream brick. It has a flat roof and a rubblestone foundation. Around 1950, the decorative cornice along the parapet was removed and the two upper stories of the facade were covered with a thin veneer of synthetic stone that was supported and anchored to the building by a wooden grid, which also boxed in the upper story windows and seems to have preserved their original architectural ornament. This cement veneering was extended across the facade of the adjoining building on the south (421 Main Street) to make the two buildings appear to be one. Thereafter they were treated as one building by the City of Racine, and they were listed as one building in the city directories, although they are historically separate structures. The veneer was removed in 1995. Exterior features of note include round stone windows lintels. Historic interior features (1995) include decorative box columns and hardwood floors. |
