Additional Information: | A 'site file' exists for this property. It contains additional information such as correspondence, newspaper clippings, or historical information. It is a public record and may be viewed in person at the State Historical Society, Division of Historic Preservation. This one-story astylistic utilitarian rearing building features a rectangular shaped plan configuration, a concrete foundation, a wood exterior, a wood trim and an asphalt shingled hip roof. No basement is included in the architectural design. Description of Complex: The St. Croix Falls State Fish Hatchery is located in the city of St Croix Falls in Polk County. The two pre-1945 buildings within this complex are the residence (1861) and the rearing house (1926). Both buildings are in very good condition. The rearing house is constructed of wood board with white wood trim. The residence is constructed in pale adam green aluminum/vinyl siding with white wood trim. The hatchery is located on a very picturesque site by the St. Croix River. Significance: The hatchery started privately in 1912. The operation was acquired by the DNR in 1920 as the first in program that used rearing ponds rather than allow only the delicate fingerlings to be planted. |
