Additional Information:See district site file. WIDE OVERHANGING BRACKETED EAVES. BRICK 1ST FLR AND ALUMINUM SIDED UPPER. 6/9 PAIRED WINDOWS. PORCHED W/ SQUARE DORIC COLUMNS AND MOULDED AND BRACKETED EAVES. DOOR W/ SIDELIGHTS. SMALL PEDIMENT OVER PORCH ENTRANCE. THE GEORGE L. GILKEY HOUSE IS SIGNIFICANT UNDER CRITERION C FOR A GOOD EXAMPLE OF PRAIRIE SCHOOL STYLE RESIDENTIAL ARCHITECTURE, AND AS A CONTRIBUTING RESOURCE IN THE CENTER AVENUE HISTORIC DISTRICT. ON MAY 15, 1882 GEORGE LELAND GILKEY WAS BORN TO MR. AND MRS. GEORGE F. GILKEY OF OSHKOSH, WISCONSIN. HE JOINED THE GILKEY AND ANSON COMPANY IN 1905 AND WORKED HIS WAY UP TO SALEMAN. IN 1910 HE, ALONG WITH GEORGE M. ANSON AND HARRY HURD, HELPED ORGANIZE ANSON, GILKEY AND HURD COMPANY. BY 1911 GEORGE L. GILKEY AND HIS WIFE MADGE WERE LISTED AS RESIDING AT 901 E. THIRD STREET. HE APPARENTLY DID NOT LIVE IN THE HOUSE LONG, AS IN 1912 HE CONSTRUCTED A NEW HOUSE AT 1204 E. SIXTH STREET, AND LIVED THERE UNTIL HIS DEATH. GILKEY ALSO HELD POSITIONS IN SEVERAL BANKS AND OTHER COMPANIES AND TOOK AN ACTIVE PART IN LOCAL AND STATE POLITICS, SERVING AS THE STATE REPUBLICAN PARTY CHAIRMAN FROM 1928 TO 1934. GILKEY DIED ON HIS EIGHTIETH BIRTHDAY, IN 1962.
