SEMI-COURSED COLORFUL CUT STONE 1ST FLR & WOOD SHINGLED UPPER. 4 STORY TURRET W/ ROUND ARCH OPEN. ARCADE & PYRAMIDAL ROOF STICK STYLE AND SPINDLEWORK BALCONIES AND BAYS. VERY TALL STONE CHIMNEY [Date Cnst:-1888]. THE T.B. SCOTT MANSION IS SIGNIFICANT UNDER CRITERION C AS AN EXCELLENT EXAMPLE OF RESIDENTIAL QUEEN ANNE STYLE ARCHITECTURE IN MERRILL. T.B. SCOTT, PROMINENT LUMBER BARON AND PRESIDENT OF THE T.B. SCOTT LUMBER COMPANY, RECIEVED DEED TO THIS PROPERTY IN 1880. IN ABOUT 1884 CONSTRUCTION WAS BEGUN ON THE HOUSE, DESIGNED BY MILWAUKEE ARCHITECT, JAMES DOUGLAS. BY THE FALL OF 1886 THE HOUSE WAS NEARLY FINISHED, HOWEVER, SCOTT DIED OCTOBER 7, 1886. SCOTT'S WIFE, ANNA, DIED THE FOLLOWING YEAR. WALTER SCOTT, T.B. SCOTT'S SON, SOLD THE HOUSE IN 1893. THE HOUSE OWNERSHIP CHANGED SEVERAL TIMES UNTIL 1923 WHEN THE SISTERS OF MERCY OF THE HOLY CROSS PURCHASED THE PROPERTY AND UTILIZE IT AS THEIR CONVENT AND A HIGH SCHOOL FOR GIRLS. |
