NAER INVENTORY (08/1979):
The C. Reiss Coal Co. charcoal briquet plant is a steel reinforced structure tow and four stories high, with a red brick exterior and flat roof. The irregular-shaped facility measures approximatey 132' x 58'. The facility includes a four-story chimney and contains large coal pulverizing wheels.
The C. Reiss Coal Co. began business in 1880 handling coal. The charcoal briquet plant was built in 1936 adjacent to the Reiss company's Fox River coal docks, which have existed since the "early (18)80's." The plant is used to manufacture charcoal briquets, for domestic use, from Sept. 15 to May 15 each year. The manufacturing process includes powdering the coal, mixing it with a binder and pressing it into compact form. The "Pocahontas" on the sign painted on the side of the briquet plant refers to a grade of coal used to make the briquets.
