Additional Information: | 2011- "Rising two stories, this side-gabled, Period Colonial Revival-style residence features parapeted endwalls that are Georgian Revival in character. The original block of the house is constructed with concrete block walls covered with a Lannon stone veneer. The sidewalls feature parapets and heavy wall chimneys. The primary entrance is located at the center of the west elevation and it is recessed; a heavy stone lintel defines the recessed opening. A large eight-over-twelve sash topped with a heavy stone lintel is located to either side of the entrance; eight-over-eight, double-hung sashes are oriented directly above these large windows while a four-over-four example is situated above the door. A one-story, clapboard-sided wing (1984) projects from the nmih endwall. It includes a recessed entrance and a stone wall chimney; it is pierced by regularly spaced, eight-over-twelve, double-hung sashes. Charles M. Ihrig constructed this house in 1937. Ihrig was born in 1899 and was a banker with Industrial Building & Loan in Waukesha. According to his daughter, Ihrig admired an old stone farmhouse in the general area and asked an architect to capture the spirit of that building; she could not remember the architect’s name. Ihrig sold the house to Rex Minkler around 1946 and moved to Waukesha. He returned to the area a few years later and constructed a second house (see discussion of W269 S3342 Merrill Hills Road). At that time, he developed the residential area along Hawthorne Hollow Drive. Minkler sold the house to Gretchen Altenbern in the late 1960s. Altenbern added the wing in 1984 and replaced a window on the rear (east) façade of the main block with a French door." -"Waukesha Bypass: Merrill Hills Rd & STH 59 to Golf Course East Alt.", WisDOT#2788-01-00, Prepared by Heritage Research, Ltd.
