NOTES
Additional Information:A 'site file' exists for this property. It contains additional information such as correspondence, newspaper clippings, or historical information. It is a public record and may be viewed in person at the Wisconsin Historical Society, State Historic Preservation Office. Begun in the fall of 1918, this house is an excellent example of the English Arts & Crafts style of architecture. Its exterior design reflects that of "The Orchard," the 1899 country home of noted Arts & Crafts style architect and designer Charles F.A. Voysey, located Chorleywood, England. Despite the similarities, the interior plan is quite different and is, therefore, not a direct copy. The plans for the Munkwitz house were designed by the American Standardized House Company (ASHC), the actual architect/designer of which remains unknown. Among the ASHC's three incorporators, two were employed and/or served as officers of the Cream City Sash & Door Company, the Milwaukee firm that was awarded the contract for the home's millwork. Hedwig "Hattie" & Dr. Munkwitz moved into the house in 1919 and remained there until their respective deaths in 1945 and 1947; they had no children. Frank, a physician and surgeon, was among the original four men on the surgical staff of the Children's Free Hospital (present-day Children's Hospital) when it opened in 1894. While the home's butler's pantry was removed in the 1950s, minimal interior spacing alterations have been made to the house. The home's current owners did, however, remodel the original room into the rear solarium, thus capitalizing on the stunning lake view. As well, the home's third level, which was originally unfinished, has since been remodeled into additional sleeping quarters. 2021: Appearance unchanged.
Bibliographic References:SHOREWOOD HISTORICAL SOCIETY, "A GUIDE TO SHOREWOOD'S ARCHITECTURE," 2001, p35 cites Eschweiler & Eschweiler as the architects but plans in possession of owners indicate otherwise. Partial plan set for home in possession of the current owners (2013) which cites the American Standardized House Company. On the 2013 Spaces & Traces home tour conducted by Historic Milwaukee.
