Additional Information: | PAIRED ROUND ARCH TRANSOMED WINDOWS SEPERATED BY NARROW PILASTER. ROUGH CUT STONE SILL COURSE. BRICK CORBELLED CORNICE W/BRICK WORK DIAMOND PANELS. BRICK BELTCOURSES. TRANSOMED STOREFRONT. J.A. Lieg was one of the most prominent general merchandise dealers in Shawano when he built this store ca.1899-1900. 2025: The J. Anton Lieg Building, a former general store, is a two-story Commercial Vernacular style building located at the northwest corner of the N Main Street and 5th Street intersection. Constructed in circa 1900, the building has a rectilinear footprint, stone foundation, red brick exterior, and a flat roof with a corbelled parapet. The façade (east elevation) has an altered storefront consisting of a recessed and canted central entrance flanked by two bays of replacement picture windows supported by iron posts. The signboard has signage for the building’s current occupant, DotCom Branding. Above the signboard is a cast iron lintel and above that is a corbelled brick frieze. A rough-cut, limestone cornice separates the first and second stories. The second story façade features three pairs of round arched window bays with one-over-one, vinyl replacement windows and half-round wood transoms. The arches tie into the stepped brick lintel. Above the windows the entablature features diamond brickwork and a corbelled cornice. The cornice, lintels, windows arches, and water table all continue around the south (side) façade. The south façade is arranged with eight bays separated by brick pilasters. Three first story windows have been covered by murals. On the second story each bay has the same paired replacement windows as the primary façade. The west (rear) façade has cream and red brick walls and segmentally arched windows openings. The north (side) façade has cream brick walls. John Anton Lieg was a prominent local businessman in the city of Shawano. His father Anton opened the family’s first general store, A. Lieg & Son, in 1868 at 207 N Main Street. After Anton’s death in 1895, John became the proprietor, and it was renamed J.A. Lieg & Co. The subject building was constructed for the business around 1900. In circa 1910, J.A. Lieg & Co. left the building, and it was occupied by Muehl’s Furniture and Hometown Furniture. J.A. Lieg & Co. was dissolved in 1921, and the subject building was sold. John and his brother Joesph opened another store at 126 S Main Street in 1924. |
