| Additional Information: | In May of 1922, Bishop Paul Rhode of the Green Bay Diocese directed the establishment of St. Matthew Catholic Church. The Bishop and twenty-five families held the first parish meeting at St. Joseph’s Orphanage. The church commissioned architect, E.W. Reynolds, to design a combination church and school building. Construction of the non-extant church-school building at the corner of Webster Avenue and St. Matthew Street began in October of 1924 with an estimated cost of roughly $35,000. St. Matthew’s Catholic School opened in the fall of 1925 under the direction of two Sisters of St. Francis. The Sisters of St. Francis of the Holy Cross taught at the school, initially living at the McCormick Home for the Aged. The Sisters of St. Francis of the Holy Cross continued to teach at the school for the next six decades. The parish’s boundaries originally extended from the North Western Railroad tracks to the De Pere city limits. These boundaries changed in 1963 with the establishment of Resurrection Catholic Church. St. Matthew Catholic Convent was constructed for the Sisters in 1966. |
