Additional Information: | Consolidated Elementary School is located at the intersection of CTH F and Consolidated School Road in the Town of Janesville. The property consists of a c.1960 school building and playground area. The one-story, flat-roof brick building displays modern influences typical of mid-century public school design in its emphasis on horizontality, arrangement of use-specific wings arranged around an administrative core, and use of continuous bands of windows to maximize natural light in the classroom.[1] The north and south elevations are broken into three bays by brick pilasters and the wall plane is dominated by steel-framed windows in a fixed-over-awning configuration above a low stuccoed spandrel wall. The flat roof has metal coping. The classroom wing and gymnasium/cafeteria wing are joined at a slight angle and separated by an office and foyer with an overhanging roof that shelters the main entrance on the south-facing main elevation. The gymnasium/cafeteria wing has no windows and a secondary entrance is located on its west elevation. The Consolidated Elementary School was built toward the end of the consolidation efforts in the Wisconsin public school system. The school is a modest example of a mid-century public school. |
