NOTES
Additional Information:The newly inventoried farmstead consists of a house [227012], a tobacco-stripping shed [227013], a tobacco barn [227014], a small three-bay barn 227015], a corn crib [227016], a shed [227017], and a pump house [227018].

The house (AHI #227012) is a two-story Gabled Ell building on a masonry foundation built ca. 1880.5 A single-story
addition is located on the north elevation, and a concrete porch with turned posts is located in the Lon the front (westfacing)
facade. The windows are replacement one-over-one units placed at irregular intervals. The house has clapboard
siding and an asphalt shingle roof.

The property appears on the 1881 Wisconsin State Atlas under the ownership of N. T. Sime, a Norwegian farmer. By
1890, it was under the ownership of Norwegian tobacco raiser and general farmer, E. P. Hoveland, and remained in the
Hoveland family until at least 1931. A literature search did not reveal information to suggest these families played a
significant role in the cultivation of tobacco in Dane County.

In Dane County, tobacco cultivators practiced other types of agriculture and animal husbandry in order to assure a stable income,
as tobacco cultivation was labor intensive and the prices fluctuated violently. The corn crib is the only outbuilding at
3428 Vilas Road that indicates these other agricultural practices.
