| Additional Information: | This Mediterranean Revival style apartment complex was constructed c.1929. It consists of two buildings fronting on Douglas Avenue: 1229 Douglas Ave and 1233 Douglas Ave. The building at 1233 Douglas Avenue is irregular in plan with brick walls and a ceramic-tiled flat roof with an angled shedroofed projection along the fagade. The building consists of two distinct masses, which were constructed at approximately the same time (c.1929). The main building mass is nearly identical to the adjacent building at 1229 Douglas Avenue with the exception of the front entrance which is lacking the gabled awning and is accessed by a concrete stoop that runs parallel to the building fagade and features a stepped brick half-wall on the opposite side. The other building mass projects from the northern half of the main building mass fagade. This 1-story mass features the same ceramic-tiled roof. Its western elevation contains a front door located within an arched recess and an adjacent bank of three shop windows. Another bank of shop windows is located in the south elevation of the 1-story building mass. The building is in good condition and retains a relatively high degree of integrity (the front door of the 1233 Douglas Avenue apartment building appears to be a relatively recent metal security door). As a Mediterranean Revival building, the apartment complex features a ceramic tiled roof with projecting rafter ends, arched window detail, and flat wall surface characteristic of the style. Although the presence of these features make the property an adequate representative of the style, less restrained examples of the style are located elsewhere in Racine (WHPD records 10 other Mediterranean Revival building in the City of Racine, 2 of which are NRHP-Iisted, including another apartment building at 826 Main St). This property has not been previously surveyed. New AHI records were created. |
