Additional Information: | This 2-story Commercial Vernacular building was constructed in 1885. It is rectangular in plan with brick and concrete block walls and a flat roof. A heavy cornice contains brick corbelling, decorative brackets, the name J. MORAWETZ in relief, and a pediment detail with the construction date in relief. The building consists of the original 2-story brick building mass and two 1-story concrete block additions to its south elevation. The front elevation faces east and is asymmetrical in plan with two doorways (one of which is deeply recessed} and two glass block windows in the concrete block additions and a single door and a pair of small single-pane windows in the original building. The second story fagade contains three 1-over-1 windows with decorative crowns. The building currently houses the local American Legion. The building is in good condition, but retains a low degree of integrity due to the replacement of shop windows across the fagade with much smaller windows and brick in-fill and the apparent replacement of second-story windows. Because of its diminished integrity (specifically the loss of its character-defining shop windows), the building is not an especially fine representative of Commercial Vernacular architecture. This building has not been previously surveyed. A new AHI record was created. |
