WOOD SHINGLED GABLE AND WOOD SHINGLED BELT COURSE. GABLED DIAGONAL PORTE COCHERE ADDED TO ENTRANCE PORCH. EXTERIOR OF BUILDING HAS BEEN SIGNIFICANTLY "TONED DOWN" FROM ITS TURN-OF-THE-CENTURY VICTORIAN LOOK. May 2001-Built for Francis A. Brown in 1888, this frame, two story, Queen Anne house rests on a foundation of rock faced concrete blocks. The multiple gable and hip roofs, covered with asphalt shingles, create an irregular silhouette. The Brown House is finished with clapbards, trimmed with cornice and corner boards and enriched with wood shingling in the gable ends and between the first and second stories. A hip roofed porch at the northeast corner of the house marks the front entrance. The porch displays slender, paired Doric columns on square piers. The Brown House has had several large additions to accommodate the Hansen-Onion-Martell Funeral Home, which has occupied the building since at least 1988. Francis A. Brown (1860-1939) was a prominent lumberman, associated with several of Marinette#25;s lumber and boom companies during the late nineteenth century. He was also one of the organizers of the First National Bank of Marinette in 1899, was a founder of the local Chamber of Commerce and served as mayor in 1899-1900. |
