Additional Information:2015
Tabor United Methodist Church is a Neo-Gothic Revival church constructed in 1906 with a 1967 one-story Contemporary addition. The T-plan sanctuary is clad in cream brick and wood shingles and rests on a rusticated concrete block foundation. Asphalt shingles cover the cross-gable roof and steeple tower, which is located at the northwest corner of the building. The front (west) facade and north and south (side) elevations feature large, stained glass, tracery windows that reach into gable ends covered with octagonal wood shingles. A 1966 fire damaged the church’s interior and necessitated renovations to the sanctuary, which were completed along with the addition on the south side of the building. The 1967 addition is rectangular in shape, clad in cream brick, and now contains the main entrance to the church under a wide canopy on the building’s front facade. A 1919 parsonage once stood where the parking lot is located today. The first Methodist services were held in Gillett in 1867 and a church building was erected in 1871 on the current site. Town founder Rodney Gillett donated the land for the sanctuary and was involved in the early administration of the church. The current congregation was formed in 1967 when the Methodist Church and the Tabor Evangelical United Brethren merged and became the Tabor United Methodist Church, which coincided with the contemporary addition to the sanctuary.
