Additional Information: | A 'site file' exists for this property. It contains additional information such as correspondence, newspaper clippings, or historical information. It is a public record and may be viewed in person at the Wisconsin Historical Society, State Historic Preservation Office. The Milwaukee Light, Heat & Traction Company Bridge over the Root River was constructed in 1905 to serve the interurban rail line that extended from Milwaukee to East Troy. It is a cast-in-place, one-span concrete arch bridge with closed spandrels. The bridge’s two concrete abutments are approximately 32 feet long (not including wing walls) and are spaced approximately 28 feet apart. Eighteen-foot-long wing walls extend from each abutment; these are the full height of the bridge where they connect to the abutments, and taper to a height of approximately four feet at the outer ends. Both the east and west faces of the deck wall are stamped with the builder’s name and construction date: “M.L.H.&T. Co. / 1905.” Chain link fencing is located along both sides of the bridge deck. Both abutments and wing walls show marked deterioration with a significant degree of cracking and spalling. A segment of the south abutment footing has been reinforced with an additional concrete footing. Part of the structure’s steel arch reinforcement has been exposed on the bridge’s east face where the concrete has fallen away. In general, the structure is largely covered in graffiti and is heavily overgrown by surrounding vegetation. As such, the bridge is in poor-to-fair condition, but retains a high degree of historic integrity. |
