Additional Information: | 2024: DESCRIPTION The Vilter Manufacturing West Pipe Shop is an industrial production shed constructed circa 1915. The building is a long, narrow rectangular plan with a central wide gabled monitor roof. The exterior walls are constructed of loadbearing cream brick masonry reinforced with pilasters between series of window bays in each elevation. The longitudinal axis is parallel to the Kinnickinnic River. Most of the original window openings remain intact with steel beam lintels and masonry sills. The windows openings in the main story have been replaced with three-part infill panels in the east and west elevations – except for the southern two bays of the east elevation which have been replaced with a vehicular entrance. The windows in the east and west elevations of the monitor roof have been covered with ribbed plastic sheeting. In the south elevation, The windows have been similarly infilled and covered. There is a vehicular entrance offset in the center, and a semi-truck loading dock has been retrofit into the east gallery end. SIGNIFICANCE The former pipe shop was one of at least nine buildings that comprised the Vilter Manufacturing Corporation complex on either side of S. 1st Street between Lincoln and Becher Streets. The complex was associated with refrigeration machinery and engine manufacture in Milwaukee; however, between 2016 and 2017, all buildings except the former pipe shop were demolished. 2016 - Cream brick production shed with pilastered walls and a wide central gable monitor. Most window openings have been infilled or downsized. |
