Additional Information: | A 'site file' exists for this property named 'Lakewood Rearing Station'. It contains additional information such as correspondence, newspaper clippings, or historical information. It is a public record and may be viewed in person at the Wisconsin Historical Society, State Historic Preservation Office. As originally built, this one-story astylisitic utilitarian storage building features a square shaped plan configuration, a concrete foundation, a wood board exterior, a wood trim, and an asphalt shingled gable roof. No basement was included in the architectural design. The building was constructed as ice house and was used for storing raw food materials for use in the hatchery. Circa 2000, the building was remodeled to accommodate pallets of feeding materials. The roof was raised and enlarged to create a covered parking space. The original door was enlarged to accommodate a forklift. The building was reclad in its current vinyl siding. Description of Complex: The Lakewood Rearing Station (33 16E-21) is located south of John Lake just north of Lakewood in Oconto County. This rearing station has a large rearing house that is directly connected with an intricate system of concrete raceways and natural ponds. The buildings are in average condition, but the raceways seem to be very well-kept. The rearing station is highlighted with a huge stone fireplace that is constructed in a rustic style. Resources on the property include the rearing house (AHI #32144), the concrete raceways (AHI #32146), a series of connected ponds (AHI #236283), a residence and garage (AHI #32139 and 32141), a former icehouse (AHI #23266), a headbox (AHI #236281), a modern storage building (AHI #236282), and several historic landscape elements including the stone fireplace (AHI #32142) and stone retaining walls (AHI #32145 and 236280).
