Additional Information: | The Wisconsin College of Physicians and Surgeons was established in 1893 and the Milwaukee Medical College in 1894. In 1907, Marquette University absorbed the Milwaukee Medical College creating the Marquette University Department of Medicine and Milwaukee Medical College. Marquette University purchased the Wisconsin College of Physicians and Surgeons in 1913, creating a separate institution known as the Marquette University School of Medicine and combining the major medical institutions of Milwaukee. After World War II, the Marquette University School of Medicine affiliated with Milwaukee's VA Medical Center. In 1967, the Heil Commission Report recommended a major public and private comprehensive regional medical center combined with the regional medical schools. In 1954, Kurtis Froedtert, the prominent Milwaukee industrialist and owner of the Froedtert Malting Company, bequeathed his estate to the establishment of a teaching hospital, which would become Froedtert Memorial Lutheran Hospital and the Milwaukee Regional Medical Center (MRMC). The medical school, removed from its relationship with Marquette University in 1967, changed its name to the Medical College of Wisconsin in 1970. The Medical College of Wisconsin moved to new facilities on the campus of the Milwaukee Regional Medical Center in 1978, including the Wisconsin Eye Institute and Curative Rehabilitation Services among others. The medical campus continued to expand rapidly in the 1990s and 2000s. New facilities have included the MACC Fund Research Center, the Medical College Clinics at Froedtert, the Medical Education Building, the Medical College Cancer Center, and the Health Research Center. 2021 - The Wisconsin Eye Institute is a Contemporary office building constructed in 1976, consisting of a nine-story rectangular block with a main entrance at the southeastern corner of the building. The building is characterized by its construction with concrete panels, bands of plate glass windows, and a flared awning suspended over the entrance. |
