Additional Information: | 2016- "This two-story commercial building with Neoclassical detailing was built c.1915. It is clad in cream and red brick with bands of pressed metal ornamentation. The foundation is not visible and the roofline is flat with a central brick chimney. Fenestration consists of downsized fixed storefront windows on the front (west) facade flanking the central entrance and pairs of vinyl, one-over-one, double-hung sash windows to either side of a grouping of three small fixed lights with a concrete sill on the second story. The recessed entrance features an elaborate decorative surround with a flared brick archway, raised brick detailing, composite pilasters, and a metal-capped pediment. The entrance itself is a downsized metal replacement door. A metal cornice divides the first and second stories and, above, the top of the second story from the parapet. The upper cornice features a wide frieze and paired brackets. Above it more decorative brickwork gives way to metal coping at the top of the facade. A small, modern concrete block entrance vestibule extends from the side (south) elevation and faces Main Street. According to the 1919 Sanborn map of Pardeeville, this building served as a general store and post office. The post office was located in the southwest corner of the building, and the store occupied the rest of the space. It was one of four general stores along Main Street indicated on the map. Research did not indicate how long this space served as the town’s post office. Currently it houses several small businesses including a gift shop and travel agent. The interior has been significantly altered with drop ceiling and carpeting." -"STH 22: STH 16-CTH CM/Barry Rd", WisDOT#6050-00-01, Prepared by Mead & Hunt, Inc. (2016). |
