NOTES
Additional Information:2017- "Faced with both painted white and red-tone brick, this two-story, eight-unit, Eclectic Period Revival-style apartment building is topped with a low-pitched/largely flat roof. The east entrance elevation terminates as a shaped parapet with stone coping; additional stone ornament panels with a floriated pattern are located beneath it. The central, slightly projecting, round-arched entrance includes a transom and sidelights, as well as a replacement steel door. The transom is trimmed with a cut-stone arch with voussoirs, and the arch is trimmed with stone coping and additional stone ornament. A pair of tall-and-narrow windows is located along the second floor; an iron balconet is located below them, while a stone label mold is located above. The remaining entrance elevation is comprised of tripartite groupings of six-over-one-light sash, two each on each floor, each with a continuous stone sill. The second-floor examples are further embellished with a blind brick arch that is outlined with a cut-stone arch comprised of voussoirs. Original multiple-light windows along the side elevations are also regularly arranged—singly, in pairs and in tripartite groupings.

Construction of this building, also erected by Mike Shapiro, Inc., was concurrent with the neighboring apartment building (AHI#233506). Slightly larger than its neighbor, this building, designed by Milwaukee architect John Topzant, includes eight units and cost approximately $25,000. Like its neighbor, it was identified as complete as of January 1929, at which time the city directory identifies it as full with eight tenants. As of 1957, the building was identified as owned by Herman Heister, who resided on Milwaukee’s East Side."

Bibliographic References:2016 survey citations: Original permit for 3281 (was 1417) N. 17th Street, 16 June 1928, includes owner name, cost and architect. The building was noted as complete as of an inspection on 19 January 1929; Milwaukee City Directory, 1929, 1930; Permits cite Herman Heister as the building owner as of a permit dated 3 June 1957. Original occupants as of 1929 include the following: Alvin Leichtfuss; William Geiger; Donald Sueck; William McNeely; Joseph McNamara; Harry Hartel; A.
