NOTES
Additional Information:A 'site file' exists for this property named 'Villa Louis'. It contains additional information such as correspondence, newspaper clippings, or historical information. It is a public record and may be viewed in person at the Wisconsin Historical Society, State Historic Preservation Office. This pair of Rustic Style stone entrance gate piers is located on both sides of Villa Louis Rd. on the north side of the Villa Louis Rd./Bolvin St. intersection and they consists of two tall, identical paneled stone piers to which are attached less tall curved stone wing walls. These piers and wing walls are made out of both dressed ashlar and polygonal stones and they were built by the WPA in 1938 to mark the entrance to the Villa Louis site. #12633 #12634 #12635 #12636 #12637 #12638 #12639 #234139 #234143 #234144 #234145 #234146 #234147 #234148 2020: These two random ashlar stone square piers are approximately 7 feet tall with corbelled inset panels one each face, a flat concrete top, and a 3 foot stone-faced wing walls which extends approximately 8 feet out from the pier on both sides. The core of the piers and walls are likely reinforced concrete with the stone inlaid on the exterior. They are located on N. Villa Louis Road at the north side of the intersection with Bolvin Street, which is located adjacent to the southeast corner of the Villa Louis property, outside the Villa Louis historic boundary. In 1935 the Villa Louis property was deeded over to the City of Prairie du Chien, and the city proceeded to turn the field immediately east of the Villa Louis house grounds into a municipal park. Amenities in the park included a swimming pool, children’s playground and athletic field, much of which was funded through WPA federal funds. These piers were built in 1938 with WPA funds.
