NOTES
Additional Information:Description and historical information from the 2023 WisDOT survey report for STH 32/N. Lake Drive, Fox Point, Milwaukee County: This T-shaped, Contemporary-style Ranch house with attached garage is sheathed with stone veneer and topped with both hipped and gabled roof lines. Foliage obscures much of the east (street-facing) elevation of the house; however, a large, four-light, floor-to-ceiling, picture window is evident next to the primary entrance and a bank of windows are also seen along the east end of the east-west portion of the T plan. Irregularly placed, rectangular windows are located along the home’s visible north elevation. Permits indicate that an addition was added onto the rear (west) end of the house in 2001. Designed by architect Howard E. Schroeder and completed in 1954, this house was originally built at an estimated cost of $40,000 for Nathan Paley and Beatrice (Hoffman) Phillips, who wed in 1928. N. Paley Phillips was born in 1907 and graduated from Marquette University Law School twenty years later. In 1928, he began practicing law in Milwaukee, where he specialized in divorce and personal injury cases. In the 1950s, he helped found the Wisconsin Academy of Trial Lawyers and served as its first president and he also served on the board of governors of the American Trial Lawyers’ Association. At his death in 1966, he was the head of Phillips, Hoffman & Phillips; additional principals included his brother-in-law Bertram J. Hoffman and the Paley’s only child, Kenneth. In 1967, the house was sold to son Kenneth and his wife Nancy, who remained in the home, with their five children, until 1991.
